hallmarking
Marking precious metals
Hallmarking is the official process of testing and stamping precious metals to certify their purity.
Gold, silver, and platinum items receive hallmarks—small stamped symbols indicating the metal's fineness and the assay office that verified it.
The practice originated in medieval goldsmiths' guilds and remains legally required in many countries: The ring must be sent for hallmarking before it can be sold.
