trotlines

Baited fishing cords

Trotlines are fishing lines stretched across a body of water, anchored at both ends, with multiple shorter lines hanging down at intervals, each with a baited hook.

The setup allows catching several fish at once without active supervision.

Trotlines are associated with catfishing in rivers and lakes across the American South and Midwest: We ran the trotlines at dawn and pulled up a dozen channel cats.
