treasure ships
Gold-bearing fleets
Treasure ships were large vessels used historically to transport valuable cargo—gold, silver, spices, silk, or other riches—typically between colonies and their imperial centers.
The Spanish treasure fleets carrying New World silver are the most famous examples.
The term evokes images of galleons laden with plunder, targets for pirates and privateers.
The treasure ship sank with its cargo of Aztec gold.
