Spanish galleons

Colonial cargo vessels

Spanish galleons were large, multi-decked sailing ships used by Spain from the 16th to 18th centuries for trade and warfare.

These vessels transported treasure from the Americas to Spain—gold, silver, and other valuables—making them prime targets for pirates and rival navies.

The term often evokes images of sunken ships and lost riches: Divers discovered a Spanish galleon off the Florida coast.
