transsexuality
Sex identity change
Transsexuality refers to the condition of having a gender identity that differs from the sex assigned at birth, particularly when accompanied by a desire to transition physically through hormones or surgery.
The term emerged in medical contexts in the mid-twentieth century and was long the standard clinical terminology.
It has largely been superseded by transgender in general usage, though some individuals still identify specifically as transsexual, often to emphasize that they have undergone or seek medical transition.
