gatekeeping
Controlling who enters
Gatekeeping is controlling access to something—resources, communities, or information.
A gatekeeper decides who gets in and who doesn't.
The term often carries negative connotations, especially online, where it describes excluding people from fandoms or identities based on arbitrary standards: Stop gatekeeping—let people enjoy things.
But gatekeeping can be neutral or positive when it means maintaining quality or protecting boundaries: Editors do necessary gatekeeping.
