top-ropes
Overhead safety lines
Top-ropes are climbing ropes anchored at the top of a route, allowing the belayer to take up slack as the climber ascends.
This setup means a fall results in minimal distance dropped, making it the safest form of roped climbing and standard for beginners: We set up top-ropes on the easier walls.
As a verb, to top-rope is to climb using this system.
