traditional climbing

Removable protection climbing

Traditional climbing is rock climbing where the climber places removable protective gear—cams, nuts, hexes—into cracks and features while ascending, then removes it afterward.

This contrasts with sport climbing, where permanent bolts are pre-drilled into the rock.

Traditional climbing, often shortened to trad climbing, demands more skill in gear placement and route-finding: She prefers trad climbing for the mental challenge.
