ticks
Arachnids needing removal
Ticks are small arachnids that attach to animals and humans to feed on blood, often transmitting diseases like Lyme.
The word also names the rhythmic sounds of a clock or the small marks used for checking items off a list: Put a tick next to each completed task.
To tick is to make such sounds or marks.
What makes someone tick is what motivates them.
To tick off is to annoy, or in British usage, to reprimand.
