arachnid

Scorpion's taxonomic class

An arachnid is an eight-legged arthropod—the class that includes spiders, scorpions, ticks, and mites.

Unlike insects, arachnids have no wings or antennae.

The term appears in scientific contexts and when someone wants to sound more precise or clinical than spider: I'm not afraid of arachnids generally, just the big hairy ones.
