coinfection

Simultaneous pathogen invasion

Coinfection is the simultaneous presence of two or more infectious agents in a host.

A patient might have coinfection with HIV and hepatitis C, or a tick bite might transmit coinfection with Lyme disease and babesiosis.

The term matters clinically because coinfections can complicate diagnosis and treatment: Coinfection with influenza and COVID-19 worsened outcomes.
