tickers

Scrolling stock displays

Tickers are devices or displays that show information in a continuous stream, typically scrolling text.

The word comes from the ticking sound of early telegraph machines that printed stock prices on paper tape.

Stock tickers display share prices; news tickers scroll headlines across screens.

A ticker is also slang for the heart: The doctor says my ticker is in good shape.

Ticker tape—the paper ribbon from old stock machines—became confetti for parades honoring heroes.
