tenor saxophone

Midrange reed instrument

A tenor saxophone is a mid-range member of the saxophone family, larger than the alto and smaller than the baritone.

Its warm, full tone makes it central to jazz, where it has been the instrument of legends like John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins: He played tenor sax in a bebop quartet.

Often shortened to tenor sax or just tenor.
