étude
Technical piano exercise
An étude is a musical composition designed primarily as a technical exercise, focusing on a particular skill or technique such as scales, arpeggios, or finger independence.
Though originally pedagogical, many études—particularly those by Chopin and Liszt—transcend mere practice pieces to become concert works of artistic merit.
The term comes from French, meaning "study," and applies most often to piano and string repertoire.
She practiced Czerny études to build speed and accuracy.
