rhythm guitar

Strumming the chords

Rhythm guitar is the guitar part in a band that provides harmonic and rhythmic foundation rather than melody or solos.

The rhythm guitarist strums chords and maintains the groove while the lead guitarist plays riffs and solos over top: She switched from rhythm guitar to bass when the band reformed.

In some bands the roles blur or one guitarist handles both.
