tenons

Wooden joint pegs

Tenons is the plural of tenon, a projecting piece of wood shaped to fit into a corresponding cavity (a mortise) in another piece, forming a joint.

Mortise-and-tenon joints are among the oldest and strongest methods of joining wood: The carpenter cut tenons on the chair legs to fit the seat.

As a verb, to tenon is to cut such projections.
