tenor sax

Midrange jazz reed

A tenor saxophone, the mid-range member of the saxophone family pitched in B-flat.

Larger than the alto and smaller than the baritone, the tenor has a warm, full-bodied sound that made it the dominant voice in jazz from the bebop era onward: He plays tenor sax in a quartet.

Also called tenor saxophone.
