slow ball
Off-speed pitch type
A slow ball is a pitch thrown at reduced speed to disrupt a batter's timing, contrasting with fastballs.
The term appears in baseball and cricket, where varying pace keeps batters off balance.
More broadly, slow ball can describe any deliberately unhurried throw: He lobbed a slow ball to the toddler.
