troubleshooter

One diagnosing malfunctions

A troubleshooter is someone who identifies and fixes problems, especially in technical systems or organizational situations.

The term originated with telegraph and telephone technicians who repaired line faults, but now applies broadly: We called in a troubleshooter to figure out why the network kept crashing.

A troubleshooter may also be a diplomatic fixer sent to resolve disputes or crises.
