acting on

Responding to information

Acting on means taking action based on something—information, advice, instinct, or authority.

If you act on a tip, you follow up on it; if you act on impulse, you do something without much deliberation.

The phrase often implies that something external prompted the action: Acting on orders from headquarters, the unit withdrew.

It can also suggest that a force is exerting influence: Gravity is constantly acting on every object on Earth.
