apposition

Explanatory noun placement

Apposition is the grammatical construction of placing two elements side by side, where the second identifies or explains the first: My brother, a doctor, lives in Boston.

Here "a doctor" is in apposition to "my brother"—they refer to the same person.

The term also describes any placing of things side by side or in contact, as in the growth of cell walls by apposition of new material.
