overlayer
Surface covering sheet
An overlayer is a layer placed or formed on top of another surface or material.
The term appears most often in technical contexts—materials science, semiconductor fabrication, surface chemistry—where thin films or coatings are deposited onto substrates: The gold overlayer was deposited by sputtering.
In computing, it can refer to graphical elements displayed atop other content.
