subsets

Parts within wholes

Subsets is the plural of subset, a term from mathematics describing a set whose members are all contained within another set.

If every element in group A also belongs to group B, then A is a subset of B.

The concept extends beyond math to describe any smaller grouping drawn from a larger one: We surveyed a subset of registered voters.

The study focused on subsets of the patient population.
