subscripting

Baseline-dropped text formatting

Subscripting is the act of placing a character slightly below the normal text line, typically in smaller type.

In mathematics and chemistry, subscripts indicate indices or quantities: H₂O, x₁.

In programming, subscripting means accessing an element within an array or collection by its index: subscripting the array with [0] returns the first element.
