sabbatical
Extended professional hiatus
A sabbatical is an extended leave from work, traditionally granted to academics every seventh year for research, travel, or renewal.
The practice has spread to other professions: She took a sabbatical to write her novel.
Unlike vacation, a sabbatical implies productive purpose—study, creation, or professional development rather than simple rest.
