strongback

Rigid reinforcing member

A strongback is a structural beam or bar used to provide support or reinforcement.

In construction and shipping, it's a rigid member that strengthens or stiffens something else—bracing a mold, supporting a load during lifting, or reinforcing a ship's deck.

The term appears across trades wherever temporary or permanent stiffening is needed: They bolted a strongback across the hatch cover.
