saddle horn

Cowboy's grip point

The saddle horn is the raised projection at the front of a Western saddle, rising from the pommel.

Cowboys use it to dally—wrap the lariat around after roping cattle.

It also provides a grip for mounting and a handhold during rough riding: She grabbed the saddle horn as the horse lurched forward.
