onion domes
Bulbous church roofs
Onion domes are bulbous, pointed domes that resemble an onion in profile, wider than the drums they sit on.
They're characteristic of Russian Orthodox churches and other Eastern European architecture: The cathedral's golden onion domes gleamed against the gray sky.
The shape may have evolved to shed snow, though this is debated.
