spindles

Thread-winding shafts

Spindles are slender rods that taper at each end.

The original spindle is a tool for spinning fiber into thread—the rod onto which twisted yarn winds.

From this come the thin turned posts in stair railings and chair backs.

In machinery, a spindle is a rotating shaft or axis.

As a verb, to spindle is to pierce paper on a spike for filing, hence the old instruction: Do not fold, spindle, or mutilate.
