sleep spindles

Slumber's neural signatures

Sleep spindles are brief bursts of brain wave activity that occur during light sleep, appearing as rapid oscillations on an EEG reading.

They last one to two seconds and are thought to play a role in memory consolidation and blocking external stimuli that might otherwise wake the sleeper.

Researchers measured sleep spindle density to assess sleep quality.
