spicule

Sponge skeletal element

A spicule is a small, needle-like structure.

In biology, spicules form the skeletal framework of sponges and some other invertebrates—tiny calcareous or siliceous shards that give the organism shape and support.

In astronomy, spicules are jets of plasma shooting up from the sun's surface.

The word applies broadly to any sharp, slender projection: bone spicules, ice spicules.
