pole position
First on grid
Pole position is the front starting spot in a motor race, awarded to the driver with the fastest qualifying time.
The term comes from horse racing, where the innermost position on the starting line was nearest the boundary pole.
Figuratively, pole position means any advantageous starting point: The merger puts them in pole position to dominate the market.
