speargrass

Sharp-seeded wild grass

Speargrass is a common name for various grasses with sharp, pointed seeds or leaves that can pierce skin or clothing.

In North America, it typically refers to species of *Stipa* or needle grass, whose seeds have a sharp tip and spiral awn that helps them drill into soil—or painfully into socks and animal fur.

In New Zealand and Australia, speargrass often denotes spiny-leaved plants of the genus *Aciphylla*.

Watch out for speargrass on the trail.
