sonant

Producing vocal vibration

Sonant is a technical term in phonetics for a voiced sound—one produced with vibration of the vocal cords.

The voiced consonants b, d, g, v, and z are sonants, as opposed to their voiceless counterparts p, t, k, f, and s.

Vowels are inherently sonant.

The term appears mainly in older linguistic literature; voiced is now more common.
