fortis

Muscularly produced consonant

Fortis is a phonetics term for consonants produced with relatively strong muscular effort and breath force, as opposed to lenis (weak) consonants.

In English, the voiceless stops /p/, /t/, and /k/ are fortis, while their voiced counterparts /b/, /d/, and /g/ are lenis.

The distinction matters more than voicing in some analyses of English pronunciation.
