soap box

Improvised platform for speeches

A soap box is a makeshift platform for public speaking, from the days when wooden crates that held bars of soap served this purpose.

The term now refers to any impromptu forum for expressing opinions, especially passionate or preachy ones.

To get on one's soap box is to launch into a lecture: Sorry, I'll get off my soap box now.
