slave state

Servitude-permitting territory

A slave state was a U.S. state where slavery was legal before the Civil War.

The term distinguished Southern states from free states in the North, particularly in debates over admitting new territories: The Missouri Compromise maintained balance between slave states and free states.

The designation became obsolete after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in 1865.
