Free-Staters

Kansas antislavery settlers

Free-Staters are advocates or residents of a "free state"—a term with different meanings in different contexts.

In American history, Free-Staters opposed the extension of slavery into new territories, particularly in Kansas during the 1850s: Free-Staters and pro-slavery settlers clashed in Bleeding Kansas.

In Irish history, Free-Staters supported the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty establishing the Irish Free State, as opposed to Republicans who rejected partition.

More recently, Free-Staters are participants in the Free State Project, a libertarian movement encouraging migration to New Hampshire to concentrate political influence: The Free-Staters want to reduce government to a minimum.
