Slackwater is the brief period when tidal current stops—the pause between ebb and flood when the water is neither coming in nor going out.
Boaters and fishermen time activities around slackwater because the calm makes navigation easier and certain fish feed more actively.
The term extends to any stretch of still water: a slackwater harbor, the slackwater behind a dam.
