deadwater

Stratified maritime drag

Deadwater is the area of still or slow-moving water behind a ship's stern, created by the vessel's passage through the water.

In nautical contexts, it refers to the wake turbulence that can drag on a ship's progress.

The term also describes any stagnant pool or stretch of water with little current: We paddled through the deadwater near the river's edge.
