shotgun microphone

Narrow pickup mic

A shotgun microphone is a highly directional microphone designed to capture sound from a narrow angle while rejecting noise from the sides and rear.

The name comes from its long, cylindrical shape resembling a gun barrel.

Shotgun mics are standard in film and television production, mounted on boom poles to pick up dialogue from just outside the camera frame: The boom operator positioned the shotgun mic above the actors.
