self-noise
Equipment's own sound
Self-noise is the sound a system generates internally, independent of external input.
In audio equipment, it's the hiss or hum produced by the electronics themselves—the noise floor you hear when nothing is playing.
In sonar and underwater acoustics, self-noise refers to sounds generated by the vessel or equipment doing the listening, which can mask the signals being detected: The submarine reduced speed to minimize self-noise.
