dynamic range
Loudest to softest
Dynamic range is the span between the quietest and loudest sounds a system can capture or reproduce—or more broadly, the ratio between minimum and maximum values in any measurable phenomenon.
In audio, a recording with wide dynamic range preserves the difference between a whisper and a crash; compression narrows that range.
Photography uses the term for the span between darkest shadows and brightest highlights a sensor can capture: This camera has excellent dynamic range in low light.
