sex change

Surgical gender transformation

A sex change is a process of altering one's physical characteristics to match a different sex, typically through hormone therapy and surgery.

The term was standard through the late 20th century but has been largely replaced by *gender reassignment* or *gender-affirming care* in medical and progressive contexts: She had a sex change in the 1990s.

Some consider the older term reductive or outdated.
