gender dysphoria

Body-self identity conflict

Gender dysphoria is psychological distress arising from a mismatch between one's internal sense of gender and the sex assigned at birth.

The term replaced "gender identity disorder" in clinical contexts to emphasize the distress rather than pathologize the identity itself.

Treatment may include therapy, hormone treatment, or surgery: She sought care for gender dysphoria at sixteen.
