set top box
Television signal decoder
A set top box is a device that connects to a television to receive and decode digital signals—cable, satellite, or streaming content.
The name reflects where these boxes typically sit: on top of the TV set.
Modern versions often include DVR capability for recording programs.
Also written as set-top box or STB.
