self-selection
Voluntary participation decision
Self-selection is the process by which people sort themselves into groups or situations based on their own choices rather than being assigned.
In research, self-selection can skew results: The study suffered from self-selection bias because only motivated patients volunteered.
The term also describes how people gravitate toward environments that suit them: Self-selection explains why risk-takers cluster in certain professions.
