seining

Dragging underwater nets

Seining is fishing with a seine—a large net that hangs vertically in the water, with floats along the top edge and weights along the bottom.

The net encircles fish, then is drawn closed to trap them.

Commercial fishers use seining for schooling species like sardines, herring, and salmon: They spent the morning seining for anchovies off the coast.
