map reading
Decoding terrain symbols
Map reading is the skill of interpreting maps to determine location, navigate routes, or understand terrain.
It involves recognizing symbols, reading contour lines, orienting the map to the landscape, and translating flat representations into real-world geography: Basic map reading should be taught before any backcountry hike.
The skill has declined somewhat with GPS navigation.
