plane crash
Midair catastrophic failure
A plane crash is an aviation accident in which an aircraft hits the ground, water, or another object, typically causing destruction and often fatalities.
The term covers everything from small private aircraft to commercial jetliners: Investigators are still determining the cause of the plane crash.
News coverage often uses the term even when "crash" alone would suffice.
